How to start XAMPP control Panel

XAMPP default installation doesn’t add any application shortcut to launcher. In this post we will add a launch icon manually.

To add a shortcut icon to launcher follow the below commends:

  1. Create a shortcut file and open it it in gedit using below commend:
    sudo gedit ~/.local/share/applications/xampp-control-panel.desktop
  2. In gedit copy-paste the below texts:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Comment=Start and Stop XAMPP
    Name=XAMPP Control Panel
    Exec=gksudo python /opt/lampp/share/xampp-control-panel/xampp-control-panel.py
    Icon=/usr/share/icons/Humanity/devices/24/network-wired.svg
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Terminal=false
    Name=XAMPP Control Panel
    Comment=Start and Stop XAMPP
    Type=Application
    Icon=/usr/share/icons/Humanity/devices/24/network-wired.svg
  3. And save the file.

That’s all. This will create the following icon in launcher.

xampp icon

If you click the icon then the following control panel will open:

xampp-control-panel

There are another type of control panel:

xampp control panel 2

If you want to open this one with your shortcut icon then change the upper file with the following one:

[Desktop Entry]
Comment=Start and Stop XAMPP
Name=XAMPP Control Panel
;If you've 32 bit system then change the last part to "manager-linux.run"
Exec=gksudo /opt/lampp/manager-linux-x64.run
Icon=/usr/share/icons/Humanity/devices/24/network-wired.svg
Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=false
Name=XAMPP Control Panel
Comment=Start and Stop XAMPP
Type=Application
Icon=/usr/share/icons/Humanity/devices/24/network-wired.svg

This will open the second type of control panel.
